Dallas Stars General Manager Jim Nill has once again been recognized for his exceptional leadership, earning a finalist spot for the NHL’s Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award for the 2024-25 season. This marks Nill’s fifth nomination, having previously won the award in both 2023 and 2024 .

A Season of Strategic Mastery

Under Nill’s guidance, the Stars achieved a 50-26-6 record, amassing 106 points. This performance secured them the 2nd spot in the Central Division of the Western Conference and propelled them to their third consecutive Western Conference Final appearance.

Key Acquisitions and Trades

Nill’s strategic moves were pivotal in the Stars’ success. The acquisition of elite forward Mikko Rantanen was a game-changer. Rantanen led the league with 20 points in the playoffs, including nine goals, and set a record by contributing to 13 consecutive team goals. His seamless integration into the team was facilitated by the Stars’ strong Finnish presence, including players Roope Hintz, Miro Heiskanen, and Esa Lindell.

Additionally, Nill bolstered the roster by acquiring forward Mikael Granlund and defenseman Cody Ceci from the San Jose Sharks, addressing key areas of need.

Drafting and Development Excellence

Nill’s commitment to building through the draft has been evident. Homegrown talents like Miro Heiskanen, Jason Robertson, Jake Oettinger, and Wyatt Johnston have become integral parts of the team’s core. Notably, Johnston led the team in goals during the regular season, while Oettinger secured an eight-year, $66 million extension, reflecting the organization’s confidence in his abilities .

Peer Pleasure

Nill’s peers and the broader hockey community have lauded his approach. His ability to make bold moves, such as the Rantanen trade, while maintaining a strong developmental pipeline, showcases a balanced and forward-thinking strategy. As the Stars continue their pursuit of another Stanley Cup, Nill’s leadership remains a cornerstone of their success.

Again, Nill has been a finalist for the award five times, winning it in 2022-23 and 2023-24. The award is given annually to the NHL's top general manager, voted on by a panel of general managers, NHL executives, and media members. Nill is competing against Kevin Cheveldayoff of the Winnipeg Jets and Bill Zito of the Florida Panthers for the award. He has been the Dallas Stars' General Manager since 2013. The winner of the award will be announced at a later date.
