GAME 2 PREVIEW: Can the Dallas Stars Replicate Their Game 1 Performance?

Updated: May 25

May 23, 2025 - Ivan Dawkins, COO Staff Writer

The Dallas Stars kicked off the 2025 Western Conference Final with a BANG, coming back from a 3-1 deficit at the start of the 3rd period, to defeat the Edmonton Oilers soundly 6-3 in Game 1.  Charged by a 3rd period power surge that would make the Texas power grid blush, Dallas lit the lamp like they had the NHL 2K cheat code.

Power Play Perfection

Dallas's power play was nothing short of lethal.  They should have been required to register it with the TSA during the pre-game skate.  They convincingly converted on three consecutive chances in the 3rd period. This highlighted the Stars' ability to capitalize on opportunities, a trend they've maintained throughout the 2025 playoffs with 15 power-play goals to date. Reuters

Stars of the Stars

Tyler Seguin led the charge with two goals and an assist.  He played like he sipped rocket fuel just before puck drop (follow @ikingdawk on X to hear Coach Pete DeBoer’s post-game comments on the speed Seguin showed on his breakaway goal in the 1st period), while Miro Heiskanen, Mikael Granlund, and Matt Duchene also found the back of the net. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made 24 saves, withstanding Edmonton's offensive threats.

Edmonton's Response

Despite strong performances from Leon Draisaitl (one goal, two assists), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (one goal, one assist), and Connor McDavid (two assists), the Oilers couldn't make their early lead stick. Coach Kris Knoblauch emphasized the need for a quick recovery ahead of Game 2.

Looking Ahead to Game 2

Game 2 of the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Western Conference Finals is set for Friday, May 23, at 7:00 PM CT at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, TX, where the Stars hope to keep the good vibes vibing, the goals flowing, and the fans from fainting every time McDavid touches the puck.
