ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings closed out their homestand on a high note Sunday afternoon, defeating the Worcester Red Sox 6–3 to secure a split in the six-game series.
After a quiet opening inning, Rochester struck first when outfielder Dylan Crews delivered an RBI single to left field, giving the Red Wings a 1–0 lead. The score held steady through two innings before Worcester answered in the fourth, as Anthony Seigler drove in a run to tie the game.
The inning also brought a setback for Rochester. Abimelec Ortiz, who had been swinging a hot bat, exited the game with a leg injury sustained while sliding into second base. Manager Matthew LeCroy said postgame that Ortiz accidentally spiked himself with his cleat and required stitches. His status for the upcoming road trip remains uncertain.
Despite the disruption, Rochester regained control in the bottom half of the inning when Andrew Pinckney plated a run on a groundout to make it 2–1.
The Red Wings broke the game open in the sixth. Crews launched a solo home run to left—his fourth of the season—before Pinckney followed with a two-run blast to extend the lead to 5–1.
“It was great,” Crews said. “A great way to end the week. It was good to see us string together quality at-bats and come away with a win.”
Rochester added an insurance run later in the game when Trey Lipscomb lined an RBI double into the gap, pushing the advantage to 6–3. Worcester managed only two sacrifice flies the rest of the way.
On the mound, Chandler Champlain delivered a strong outing, pitching six innings while allowing minimal damage. He threw 76 pitches—51 for strikes—and recorded four strikeouts to earn the win.
LeCroy credited his team’s defensive consistency as a key factor in the victory.
“If you look at where we’re at, we’re winning with our defense,” he said. “I’m proud of the way the guys fought today. Offensively, we’re still working to get going, and pitching has been inconsistent, but our defense has been solid. That’s something we can control.”
With the win, Rochester heads on the road to face the Syracuse Mets, beginning Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. on Cinco de Mayo.
