ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The start of a new season brought energy, optimism, and a strong crowd to the Rochester Sports Complex on Saturday night, but the Flower City Union could not capitalize on their chances in a 3-1 season-opening loss to Ambassadors FC.
Opening their fifth season in front of an enthusiastic home crowd, the Union battled evenly with the visitors through the opening 20 minutes in a fast-paced and physical contest. Both clubs traded possession and opportunities early, though neither side could find the finishing touch.
Flower City’s best chance of the first half came after a crisp passing sequence created space in the attacking third. A dangerous cross floated into the box for a header opportunity, but the attempt drifted just wide of the left post, keeping the match scoreless.
Scoring chances remained scarce throughout the evening as both defenses tightened and goalkeepers came up with key stops. Rochester generated three first-half shots on goal — all headers — but none could break through, with attempts either sailing wide or being blocked away.
The breakthrough finally arrived just before halftime.
In the 45th minute, Ambassadors FC forward Amir Spratt capitalized on a deflected save inside the box, knocking home the rebound to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage heading into the break.
The Union attempted to respond early in the second half and nearly found an equalizer moments after play resumed, but another promising opportunity slipped wide right.
That missed chance proved costly.
Just five minutes into the second half, Spratt struck again, finishing off another scoring opportunity to extend the Ambassadors’ lead to 2-0 and silence the Rochester crowd.
The momentum continued to swing in favor of the visitors minutes later when Flower City was called for a penalty inside the box. Midfielder Diego Pinto calmly converted the penalty kick, pushing the lead to 3-0 midway through the half.
Despite the deficit, the Union continued to press forward and avoided the shutout late in regulation when Matt Bamford found the back of the net for Flower City’s first goal of the season.
Rochester pushed aggressively during five minutes of stoppage time but was unable to generate another breakthrough as Ambassadors FC closed out the 3-1 victory.
After the match, Flower City Union head coach Jordan Sullivan pointed to execution and missed opportunities as the difference in the contest.
“Didn’t like the result of the game,” Sullivan said. “They had a good game plan against us, and they executed it well. We didn’t execute our game plan, and we weren’t able to finish. The goal is to keep emphasizing to the guys about finishing better as the season goes on.”
Flower City Union falls to 0-1 on the young season and will look to rebound at home in two weeks when they host Erie Commodores FC.
First kick is scheduled for 6 p.m.
