ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings' offense struggled to find its rhythm Tuesday night, managing just two hits in a 2-1 loss to the Toledo Mud Hens at Innovative Field.
Rochester's lone run came on a solo home run from Trey Lipscomb, his 12th of the season. The blast accounted for the Red Wings' only offense of the evening, as Toledo pitching kept Rochester's lineup in check throughout the game.
The Mud Hens got a solo home run from Andrew Navigato, his second of the season, before Ben Malgeri delivered the decisive blow with an RBI single that broke a 1-1 tie and gave Toledo a lead it would not relinquish.
Despite drawing six walks, the Red Wings were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Their only other hit came off the bat of Harry Ford.
Rochester starter Jackson Kent turned in a solid performance, keeping the Red Wings within striking distance, but the offense could not provide enough support.
Following the game, manager Matthew LeCroy reflected on the team's performance.
"We couldn't really generate any offense tonight despite getting some good at-bats off their pitcher," LeCroy said. "I thought Jackson Kent did a good job of keeping us in the ballgame. You have to tip your cap to them, they did a good job of putting up zeros on us. We have to bounce back tomorrow. This is part of the process that you have to go through. This is going to be a tight race to the finish, and we just have to figure out a way to push some runs through."
The loss comes at a critical point in the season as Rochester remains locked in a tight race with Nashville and Memphis for a playoff spot in the International League's first-half standings.
The Red Wings will look to even the series on Wednesday afternoon when they return to action against Toledo. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
