Rochester Drops Home Finale to Cleveland, 2-1

By Christopher Drummond

ROCHESTER, N.Y.-- This night had everything—stakes, sentiment, and a sellout crowd buzzing for fan appreciation—but it ended with the Rochester Americans still searching for the point that could punch their playoff

A 2–1 loss to the Cleveland Monsters on Friday night at Blue Cross Arena denied Rochester a chance to clinch in front of its home fans, pushing the drama into the season’s final weekend. The defeat also carried a deeper emotional weight: it marked the final regular-season broadcast of longtime voice Don Stevens, whose four-decade career has become synonymous with Amerks hockey.

From the opening puck drop, the game felt like playoff hockey. Both teams skated with urgency, trading chances but finding no breakthrough in a tightly checked first period. Rochester killed off an early penalty and generated a power play of its own, yet neither side could capitalize. After 20 minutes, the shots were even at eight apiece—and the score remained 0–0.

The tension only built in the second.

Rochester’s Anton Wahlberg nearly ignited the building when he was awarded a penalty shot, but Cleveland’s netminder—brilliant all night with 32 saves—turned him aside to preserve the deadlock. Moments later, the Monsters seized momentum. Just past the midway point of the period, a rebound chance was buried past Devon Levi, giving Cleveland a 1–0 lead despite Rochester carrying the shot advantage.

The Amerks refused to let the moment slip quietly.

Early in the third, Rochester’s persistence on the power play paid off. Olivier Nadeau blasted home his 13th goal of the season from the high slot, finishing a setup from Gavin Beyreuther and Wahlberg to tie the game 1–1 and re-energize the crowd.

But the response from Cleveland was swift—and decisive.

With just over five minutes remaining, the Monsters struck again, slipping a go-ahead goal past Levi to reclaim a 2–1 advantage. Rochester pushed hard in the closing minutes, peppering the net with chances, but couldn’t find the equalizer that would have salvaged a crucial point.

“We had our chances,” said head coach Michael Leone. “I thought the guys played hard. It was just unfortunate we couldn’t earn a point that we needed.”

Now, the Amerks’ postseason hopes come down to the road. Rochester must navigate a grueling back-to-back-to-back stretch to close the season, beginning with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before a finale against the Hershey Bears. One point could be enough—but anything less opens the door for the Utica Comets to slam it shut via the tiebreaker.

For a team that’s battled all season, the margin now is razor-thin.

And fittingly, after a night that honored the past, the Amerks’ future will be decided in the final miles of the road ahead.
